“Her name is Ruth. She’s a school counselor. Dash is sitting with her at the park.”

Laurel pushed herself upright so quickly that she nearly lost her balance.

“We have to go.”

“We will.”

“Now.”

Her voice was no longer quiet. It carried the sharp edge of a mother who had just realized that every assumption holding her life together had failed at once.

I led her to my car.

During the drive back to the park, Laurel sat rigidly in the passenger seat, gripping her worn canvas bag against her chest. She asked three times whether Dash had eaten. Twice, she asked whether he had cried.

“He had a sandwich,” I told her. “And some apple slices. Ruth brought them.”

“Did he ask for me?”

“Yes.”

Laurel turned toward the window.

Streetlights slid across her reflection, illuminating the strain in her face and the faint purple shadows beneath her eyes.

“What did he say?”

“He said you always come back.”

Her mouth trembled.

“He believes everything I tell him.”

There was no pride in her voice. Only guilt.

I kept my eyes on the road. “Most children do.”

“That’s the problem.”

We reached the park shortly after eight. The paths had emptied, and the pond had become a dark sheet beneath the lamps. The old bench stood under a maple tree near the water.

Dash was still sitting on it.

Ruth sat beside him, holding a paper cup of hot chocolate while Dash showed her the torn seam along his rabbit’s ear. My sister was fifty-six, with silver beginning to appear in her dark hair and the patient stillness of someone who had spent decades waiting for frightened children to find their words.
