However, as soon as I finished removing my makeup, the door opened:ad “Mom is too drunk, let her lie down for a while, she’s too loud down.” My mother-in-law, a controlling and notoriously strict woman, stumbled, hugging a pillow, with her breath stinking of alcohol, her low-cut blouse and her red face. Gentey society.ad

I was about to help her in the living room, but my husband stopped me: “Let mom go to bed here, it’s just a night. One night. Our wedding night.”ad
Bitterly, I took the pillow to the couch, not daring to react for fear of being labeled a “rude wife.”
All night I jumped and went back to bed, unable to sleep. Someone’s shadow from above walked back and forth, the wood creaked, then the silence. It was almost daylight when I finally fell asleep.
When I woke up, it was almost 6 a.m. I climbed the stairs with the intention of waking up my husband and greeting my relatives. I opened the door gently… and froze. My husband was lying on his back. My mother-in-law was very close to him, in the same bed that I had given up for her. I approached, with the intention of waking him up. But when I looked at the sheet, I stopped abruptly. On the white sheet… there was a fax

Part 2

I stood still on the threshold. The spot was dark, spread close to the edge of the bed, and for a moment my mind built the worst possible version of the scene. But that’s not what really stopped me. It was silence.

My mother-in-law slept with her mouth ajar, still dressed, makeup run. My husband was breathing deep, alien to everything. I approached it slowly and then I saw it clearly: a glass of red wine overturned on the nightstand, the liquid drained to the sheet. Nothing more. No treason, no scandal worthy of soap opera. Just the carelessness of a woman who had drunk too much and a room that no one had bothered to order. Astronomy

I felt immediate relief, followed by something more uncomfortable: shame over the speed with which my mind had jumped to the worst conclusion. But under that shame there was something else, harder and more real. It was not jealousy. It was clarity.

I looked at the room—my room, which should be the beginning of my married life—turned into my mother-in-law’s guest room for a night that “meant nothing.” I looked at my husband, asleep without remorse, without even noticing that I had spent the night on the couch.

I didn’t wake him up.
