1. The Gilded Cage
The grand ballroom of the St. Regis hotel was a masterclass in suffocating opulence.
It was awash in the warm, golden glow of massive crystal chandeliers that hung like weeping diamonds from the vaulted ceilings. The air was thick, heavy with the mingling scents of imported orchids, roasting wagyu beef, and the aggressive, expensive perfumes of the city’s elite.
It was a celebration. Specifically, it was a celebration of Julian Vance’s ascension to the role of Chief Executive Officer of Vanguard Holdings, a massive, multi-national logistics and real estate conglomerate.
To the two hundred perfectly dressed, powerful guests in the room—investors, politicians, and socialites—Julian was a visionary. He was a charismatic, brilliant, generously philanthropic titan of industry. He was a man who commanded boardrooms with an easy smile and possessed a reputation as a fiercely devoted, loving husband to his beautiful, quiet wife.
To me, Julian Vance was a warden. And this ballroom was merely the largest cell in my meticulously curated, psychological prison.
