I Pretended to Be the Daughter of an Elderly Man I Met by Chance – Days Later, His Lawyer Found Me and Said, ‘You Walked Straight Into His Trap’ part 2

PART 2: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE PRETENCE

We met in Eric’s office.

A wooden box sat between us.

“Nathan was your biological father,” Eric said.

For several seconds, the words made no sense.

Then he placed a file in front of me. Inside was a signed acknowledgement of paternity from before my birth, letters my mother had returned unopened, and evidence of a genealogy match.

Years earlier, I had submitted my DNA while searching for relatives on my mother’s side.

Nathan had used it to find me.

He learned where I volunteered and deliberately chose that hospice.

“He arranged everything?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“For all six weeks?”

“Yes.”

I stood so quickly my chair hit the wall.

Nathan had known exactly who I was while asking me to pretend to be his daughter. Eric had known too. They had taken away my right to decide whether I wanted a relationship with the man who abandoned my mother.

Eric admitted Nathan feared I would refuse to see him if I knew the truth.

“That was my choice,” I said.

Eric lowered his eyes. “I told myself he was dying. I believed six weeks of comfort would hurt less than the truth.”

“You decided his comfort mattered more than my consent.”

“Yes,” he said. “I was wrong.”

Inside the wooden box were two bundles of letters—one addressed to me and one to Eric. Beneath them were papers leaving us joint ownership of Millie’s Diner.

“Who are you to Nathan?” I asked.

Eric’s jaw tightened.

“His son.”

Nathan had married years after abandoning my mother. Eric had grown up in Nathan’s home, but their relationship had never been warm.

“He paid the bills and attended school meetings,” Eric said. “But he never asked how I felt unless the answer affected my grades.”

“And you still protected him.”

Eric looked away. “When he told me about you, I thought he was finally trusting me like a son. Then you arrived with coffee, and he became the father I had wanted my entire life.”

“You resented me.”

“Yes.”

That night, I read Nathan’s letter.

He admitted he had failed both of us differently. He had abandoned me completely, while raising Eric without affection.

He had arranged our meeting because he wanted to discover whether I could care about him before learning what he had done.

That realization made me feel sick.

When Nathan asked whether he had been convincing, he had not been pretending to be my father.

He had been pretending not to be.

His regret had become one more demand. He wanted forgiveness without giving me the chance to question him, reject him, or tell him how his absence had shaped my life.

Nathan’s final hope was that Eric and I would give each other the family he had denied us.

I called Eric the next morning.

“We are not required to become family because Nathan wanted a clean ending.”

“I agree.”

“And I’m not forgiving you.”

“I understand.”

For the next month, we communicated only through separate lawyers.

Millie’s Diner could not be sold without both signatures. The building was valuable, but the business was struggling. Eric wanted to sell the property, pay the debts, and divide what remained.

At first, I agreed.

Then we visited the diner.
