Part 2: The Dinner

The next morning, I confronted Vanessa.

“You will not crop Nora out again or decide how much of herself is acceptable.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“This family has spent sixteen years acting as if everything revolves around Nora’s feelings.”

“She has been mocked for the way she was born.”

“The world won’t always adjust.”

“This is not the world,” I said. “This is her family.”

Days after we returned, I invited everyone to dinner. Nora wore a sleeveless yellow dress. The evening stayed peaceful until dessert.

Vanessa placed her phone on the table and enlarged a beach photograph.

“I can’t post a single picture. Those stains are in every shot.”

Nora froze.

“Put the phone away.”

“If she knows she looks like that, why wear something revealing?” Vanessa asked. “People will wonder what’s wrong with her.”

A sob escaped Nora.

“You’re humiliating my child in her own home.”

“She could have covered up.”

I revealed that Vanessa had cropped Nora from a photograph during the trip. Nora turned to me.

“You knew?”

“I found out in Florida.”

“And you still invited her?”

I had hoped to handle it quietly, but Nora said, “She’s hurting me again.”

She was right. I had managed Vanessa instead of stopping her.

Then ten-year-old Noah stood.

“Aunt Vanessa has been cutting Nora out since she was eleven.”

Vanessa went pale.

While preparing a family-history project, Noah had found original photographs and Vanessa’s edited copies in a shared folder.

She tried to leave, but I blocked the doorway.

“Noah, show us.”

He connected my laptop to the television.

One image showed eleven-year-old Nora beside my mother at a birthday party. In Vanessa’s copy, Nora was gone. Another holiday picture ended at my father’s shoulder, erasing her again.

More followed: birthdays, picnics, holidays, and vacations. Year after year, Vanessa had removed my daughter from our family history.

Nora stared at the screen, crying.

Vanessa reached for the cable.

“They’re my pictures.”

“They are pictures of my daughter.”

Vanessa claimed she was protecting the family image. Then Lily spoke.

“That isn’t true.”

She said Vanessa once made her retake a birthday picture because Nora’s sleeve had shifted.

“You said people would stare at Nora instead of me,” Lily said. “But I never thought her marks were ugly. I thought they looked like lily pads.”

Part 3: The Boundary

My mother took Nora’s hand.
