My daughter’s future in-laws travelled from Europe to meet our family. During dinner, they began speaking French, completely certain I could not understand them.

Then I heard what they said about my daughter.

My name is Margaret Doyle. I am sixty-three, divorced, recently retired, and living alone outside Rochester.

For most of my adult life, I had learned how to make myself invisible.

During thirty-one years of marriage, my former husband rarely shouted. He did not need to. A raised eyebrow, an impatient sigh, or a quiet question about whether my opinion was really necessary usually made me retreat.

By the time our divorce became final, I had forgotten how to occupy a room without apologising.

My daughter Claire was different.

At thirty, she was a successful graphic designer living in Boston. She was thoughtful, practical, and direct. Some people mistook her calm nature for simplicity, but she had never needed to perform intelligence for anyone.

Two years earlier, she met Luca Beaumont, a structural engineer raised in Brussels. He was quiet, kind, and completely devoted to her.

When he proposed, Claire called me first.
