He Insisted on Paying for Our First Date. I Thought I’d Met the Perfect Gentleman—Until the Next Morning Changed Everything

Fictional Story

By the time I turned thirty-three, I had almost given up on dating.

Not because I didn’t believe love existed.

I simply no longer believed it was hiding behind another dating app profile featuring fishing photos, gym selfies, or bios that read, “Just seeing what’s out there.”

After enough disappointing first dates, you stop expecting butterflies.

You start hoping for basic conversation.

Someone who arrives on time.

Someone who asks questions.

Someone who doesn’t spend dinner staring at a phone.

So when my best friend Jenna insisted she knew “the perfect guy,” I agreed more out of loyalty than optimism.

“I’ve known him for years,” she promised.

“He’s kind.”

“Successful.”

“And, believe it or not, he’s actually respectful.”

I laughed.

“You’re setting the bar pretty high.”

“No,” she smiled.

“The bar has just been on the floor for too long.”

I couldn’t argue with that.

His name was Daniel.

Thirty-six.

Architect.

Never married.

No children.

He loved hiking, reading history books, and restoring old furniture.

At least, that’s what Jenna told me.

We exchanged a few messages before deciding to meet at a small Italian restaurant downtown.

Nothing fancy.

Just somewhere quiet enough to have a real conversation.

I arrived ten minutes early.

At the airport parking lot, I found my son sleeping in his car with his twins. I asked, “Where is the $150K I invested in your startup?” He broke down. “My wife and her family took everything and claimed I’m mentally unstable.” I got furious. “Pack your things. We’re fixing this now.” – usnews PART 2
