“What if it does?”

She inserted the key.

The lock turned.

Neither of us moved.

Finally, Laurel pulled the metal door open.

Inside was a small black case.

No money.

No dramatic stack of documents.

Only a case, a folded coat, and a child’s yellow rain boot.

Laurel reached for the boot first.

“That’s Dash’s.”

“You’re sure?”

“I bought the pair at a thrift store. We lost this one the week Elias disappeared.”

She held it against her chest.

I removed the black case and placed it on the floor.

Inside were photocopied invoices, employee schedules, bank transfer summaries, and photographs of boxes stacked inside a hotel maintenance room.

The documents were arranged by date.

Elias had been collecting evidence for months.

Laurel picked up one invoice.

“These companies all have the same address.”

I examined it.

She was right. Different business names, identical mailing location.

“There’s enough here to reopen the investigation,” I said.

“Then he didn’t steal the money.”

“It strongly suggests someone wanted it to look as though he did.”

At the bottom of the case lay a small digital recorder.

Laurel pressed the power button.

Nothing happened.

“The battery is dead,” I said.

“We can charge it.”

Beneath the recorder was a sealed plastic sleeve containing three photographs.

The first showed Elias entering the hotel through a service door.

The second showed him speaking with a man in a dark overcoat near the loading area.

The third had been taken from farther away.
