The millionaire owner came in dressed like a humble client to his own watchmaking… and an employee made him regret his lie part 2

“Lucía Ramírez will be promoted to senior consultant from today. Your salary triples. And you’ll have my support straight.

Esperó verla feliz. Esperó alivio, gratitud, quizá una sonrisa.

Pero Lucía estaba pálida.

“Was it all a test?” he asked.

Matthew lost his smile.

Not exactly. I wanted to know the truth.

“Lucía, I wanted to protect you.

I don’t need you to protect me by lying to me.

The whole shop listened.

“You didn’t see me as a person,” she continued. You saw me as an answer to your doubt: “Are there still good people?” And I wasn’t born to show humanity to a boring millionaire.

Mateo wanted to get closer.

“I’m sorry.

“Me too.

Lucia took off her badge and left it on the counter.

—Necesito salir.

Nadie se atrevió a detenerla.

That afternoon, Mateo waited for her in Parque Mexico with a huge bouquet of red roses. He felt ridiculous, but desperate. When Lucia appeared, she wore a simple jacket and tired eyes.

“Lucía, please. Let me explain.

She looked at the flowers.

Is this part of your theater too?

Matthew lowered the bouquet.

“No. I love you.

Lucía cerró los ojos un segundo, como si esas palabras le dolieran.

Don’t say that to fix what you broke.

—Puedo darte estabilidad. Puedo ayudarte con la escuela, con la renta, con lo que necesites. Nunca volverías a preocuparte por dinero.

She let out a sad laugh.

That’s what you don’t understand. I spent years building myself not to depend on anyone. I survived a violent father, in debt, at funerals, at jobs where I was treated as less. And when someone finally looked at me without pity, it turned out that I was also evaluating myself.

Matthew felt that the flowers weighed like stones.

—No quise lastimarte.

—Pero lo hiciste.

Lucia took a deep breath.

I will resign. I won’t accept the promotion. I don’t want my future to depend on your guilt.

—Lucía…

“If you ever talk to me again, let it be without disguise, without evidence and without wanting to save me.

He walked under the park lights. Matthew didn’t follow her. For the first time he understood that loving someone was not reaching him with money, but respecting the distance that person needed to heal.

Six months later, a small flower shop opened in a quiet corner of the Roma colony.

His name was Flowers of Lucia.

It was neither big nor luxurious, but every detail had its hand: painted pots, colored slats, bouquets of artrays, out-of-season cempasúchil and roses wrapped in kraft paper. Lucia had opened it with her savings, a small loan and whole nights without sleep.

The first month was difficult. The second one too. But the neighbors started recommending it. A woman bought flowers every Monday for her deceased husband. A boy was asking for sunflowers to apologize to his girlfriend. A girl walked in every Friday for a single daisy for her teacher.

Lucia discovered that she didn’t want to sell luxury. I wanted to sell gestures.

Una mañana de lluvia suave, mientras acomodaba lirios blancos, vio un coche negro estacionarse al otro lado de la calle.

Mateo bajó.

He was not wearing imposing suit. Neither giant roses. It brought a single small and simple bugambily pot with the leaves wet by rain.

He stayed at the entrance, uninvaded.

“Hi, Lucia.

She looked at him for a long time.

“Hi, Mateo.

He raised the pot carefully.

I didn’t come to buy forgiveness. I came to ask you if this plant needs direct sun or shade. They told me that they attend well here to those who know nothing.

Lucia tried not to smile, but could not help it.

“It depends. If you take care of her patiently, she blooms a lot. If you want to control it too much, it dries.

Matthew nodded, understanding that they didn’t talk about plants alone.

“Then I will learn to take good care of her.

Lucia took the pot and put it on the counter.

I can explain. But this time, no lies.

“No lies,” he said.

The rain was still falling on Rome, washing stools, cars and old wounds. There was no film kiss or eternal promise. Only two people standing face to face, for the first time on the same level.

And sometimes, after so much pain, that’s more powerful than any perfect ending.
