The sentence was small, but it changed the size of the room.

Samuel looked down at Kestrel, and the old dog’s eyes rose to meet his.
“Partners,” he said.
Outside, the evening had turned gold across the parking lot.
Samuel opened the passenger door of his old pickup.
Kestrel jumped in with careful strength, turned once, and settled like he had practiced the motion years before.
Samuel climbed behind the wheel.
Before he started the engine, he reached to the dash and moved a faded strip of leather from the ashtray.
