I Married a Terminally Ill Man Because It Was His Final Wish – After His Funeral, His Lawyer Knocked on My Door and Said, ‘He Made Me Wait Until Today to Tell You Who He Really Was’ PART 2

Mr. Baron smiled faintly.

“He asked because, after years of quietly hoping you were all right, he finally had a chance to meet the woman you had become.”

Carl’s letter explained the rest.

*I did not request you because I expected gratitude.*

*I wanted to know whether life had been kind to you.*

*Then you entered carrying vegetable soup, moved my laundry without making me feel weak, and argued that “qi” was an acceptable Scrabble word.*

*I knew. Not because you looked the same.*

*Because you made the room easier to stand inside.*

I turned toward the final pages of the journal.

*Age 34.*

*I hope she knows ordinary kindness is never ordinary to the person who needs it.*

Then came the final entry, dated three days after our wedding.

*Age 35.*

*She did.*

Beneath it, Carl had written one last sentence.

*And so did I.*

I blinked, but the world only blurred further.

Then I understood why Carl had proposed without telling me our shared history.

He knew that if he revealed everything, I might agree from guilt.

He wanted my answer to remain free.

Autumn came six weeks later.

I drove back to Silver Oak Street.

Arthur’s house was gone.

The workshop had been replaced by a narrow apartment building.

The bicycle rack had disappeared.

Only the maple tree remained.

I sat beneath it with Carl’s old novel resting on my lap.

When I opened the book, the pressed leaf loosened and drifted onto my knees.

For years, Carl had returned to those pages whenever life made him doubt whether kindness mattered.

What he remembered was one ordinary afternoon.

A girl talking about a kitten.

A red leaf tucked inside a book.

Nothing heroic.

Nothing I had even remembered.

Yet it became his compass.

I placed one hand over the leaf.

“You spent your whole life thanking me for something I never knew I gave you.”

The branches moved above me.

Red leaves crossed the sky like small, bright letters.

For a moment, I considered placing Carl’s leaf back inside the novel.

Instead, I let it fall beside the roots.

Not discarded.

Returned.

Then I closed the book and carried it home.
