Then he shook his head.
“No. You’re wrong.”
“I hope I am.”
“What made you think this?”
“Daniella saw her. Not just today. She saw her here before, with the same man.”
His face hardened defensively.
“There must be an explanation.”
“Then let her give you one.”
I led him to the room.
Standing outside that door, I could hear my own heartbeat.
Ethan looked from the room number to me. Pain and disbelief moved across his face.
“This is insane,” he whispered.
“Knock on the door.”
He raised his hand and struck it firmly against the wood.
For several seconds, there was no response.
Then the door opened.
Victoria stood on the other side.
The moment she saw Ethan, the color vanished from her face.
Part Five: The Truth Behind the Door
“Ethan?”
Her voice was barely more than a breath.
She looked past him and saw me standing in the hallway.
Fear flashed through her expression.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
Ethan did not answer immediately.
He was looking over her shoulder.
A man stood inside the room near the window.
He was tall, well-dressed, and visibly uncomfortable. His jacket was draped over a chair, and two glasses sat on a small table beside him.
No one needed to explain what we were seeing.
Ethan stepped into the room.
I followed, afraid to leave him alone during the moment his marriage began to collapse.
“Who is he?” Ethan asked.
Victoria closed the door with a trembling hand.
“This isn’t what you think.”
The sentence sounded painfully familiar.
It was the kind of answer people gave when the truth had already become impossible to hide.
Ethan’s voice remained low.
“Then tell me what I should think.”
The man glanced toward the door.
“I should probably leave.”
“No,” Ethan said sharply. “Stay.”
The man stopped.
Victoria drew a breath and attempted to regain control of the situation.
“Ethan, please don’t make a scene.”
He stared at her.
“A scene?”
“We can discuss this at home.”
“I asked who he is.”
Victoria folded her arms, as if Ethan were the one behaving unreasonably.
“He’s a friend.”
Ethan glanced around the room.
“A friend you meet in a hotel?”
“We needed privacy to talk.”
“For what?”
She hesitated.
That silence said more than any confession could have.
Ethan turned to the man.
“What’s your name?”
