Not thrown away.

Not destroyed.

Simply removed.

“We don’t have to decide everything while we’re angry,” Maya said.

It was the first decision they made together after the hospital.

By evening, their phones were full of messages.

Chloe apologized, then blamed their mother, then apologized again.

Mark claimed he believed the trip had been approved.

Eleanor sent nothing.

That silence worried David more than any message could have.

At seven o’clock, Daniel called.

“I found Samuel Reeves.”

“Where?”

“Queens.”

“Can we speak to him?”

“Not yet. He’s seventy-eight and currently in assisted living.”

“Does he run Hudson Family Consulting?”

“According to the facility administrator, Samuel has advanced memory problems. His nephew handles his affairs.”

“What’s the nephew’s name?”

“Jonathan Reeves.”

David wrote it down.

“Do I know him?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Does my mother?”

Daniel paused.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Jonathan was employed by your mother for almost twelve years.”

David stood still.

“What did he do?”

“Financial administration.”

Maya, listening on speakerphone, closed her eyes.

“He had access to the accounts,” she said.

“Probably,” Daniel replied.

“And he could have seen my messages to Marisol if Eleanor had access to my phone,” Maya added.

David looked at her.

“Did she?”

“After the C-section, she said she would answer messages for me while I slept.”

A new shape emerged from the confusion.

Not a complete answer.

But a path.

“Could Jonathan have created the company using his uncle’s name?” David asked.

“Yes.”

“Could he have redirected Maya’s payments?”

“Yes.”

“And my mother’s?”

“Yes.”

“Why would my mother pay him?”

“That remains the question.”

Daniel hesitated.

“There is another possibility. Eleanor may have believed she was paying him to solve a problem.”

“What problem?”

“Marisol.”

The next morning, the snow stopped.

Sunlight filled the hospital room, making everything look newly washed.

Dr. Patel signed Maya’s discharge papers shortly after ten. A nurse reviewed medication schedules, warning signs, follow-up appointments, and newborn care.

Maya asked questions without apologizing for them.

David wrote down every answer.

When it was time to leave, he placed Liam into a new insulated car seat. Maya wore a warm coat over loose clothes, and the hospital provided a small pillow to protect her incision from the seat belt.

Lena met them near the elevator.

“You have my number,” she said.

Maya nodded.

“Thank you.”

“You did well.”

Maya gave a surprised laugh.

“I ended up in the hospital.”

“And you told the truth. Sometimes that is the first step toward doing well.”

In the elevator, David reached for Maya’s hand.

She took it.

The apartment smelled faintly of lemon cleaner when they returned.

The refrigerator was full.

The thermostat read seventy-two.

Fresh blankets waited in Liam’s bassinet. On the kitchen table sat soup, bread, fruit, and a vase of white flowers sent by Daniel.

Maya stood in the doorway.

For a moment, she could not move.

David worried the apartment itself had become too painful.

“We can stay upstairs,” he said. “The other place is ready.”

Maya looked around.

“No.”

“You’re sure?”

“This is my home.”

She stepped inside.

David watched her walk slowly to the kitchen, open the refrigerator, and study the shelves.

She touched a container of broth.

Then she closed the door.

“I want soup,” she said.

David smiled.

“I can manage that.”

“You burned water once.”

“That was years ago.”

“You forgot the pot was on the stove.”

“I was distracted.”

“You were watching a basketball game.”

David lifted his hands.

“I have grown.”

Maya sat at the table while he warmed the soup.

Liam slept nearby.

For twenty quiet minutes, they were simply a family returning home.

No secrets.

No cameras.

No accusations.

Just steam rising from bowls and winter sunlight on the floor.

Then the front door buzzer sounded.

David froze.

Maya looked toward the hall.

The buzzer sounded again.

David checked the building monitor.

His mother stood in the lobby.

Alone.

No sunglasses. No expensive coat. No controlled smile.

She looked older than she had three days earlier.

“Don’t let her in,” Maya said.

David nodded.

He pressed the intercom.

“You cannot come upstairs.”

Eleanor looked directly into the lobby camera.

“I need five minutes.”

“No.”

“David, please.”

He had heard his mother angry, proud, wounded, and persuasive.

He had almost never heard her say please.

Maya stood slowly.

“You don’t owe her a conversation,” she said.

“I know.”

“Do you want one?”

David looked at the monitor.

Part of him wanted to shut off the screen.

Another part—the boy who had spent years trying to earn his mother’s approval—wanted answers.

“I want to hear what she says,” he admitted.

Maya considered this.

“Not here.”

David understood.

The apartment had to remain safe.

He went downstairs alone, carrying his phone with the recorder running.

Eleanor waited near the entrance.

She had brought no luggage.

“Where are Chloe and Mark?” David asked.

“At their apartment.”

“And Ethan?”

“With his father.”

“Good.”

Eleanor’s gaze moved toward the elevator.

“How is the baby?”

“Safe.”

“And Maya?”

“Recovering.”

His mother closed her eyes briefly.

“I didn’t know she was that sick.”

“She told you.”

“She said she was sore.”

“She was bleeding.”

“I thought she was exaggerating.”
