My daughter always begged me to let her stay with her grandfather, but after hearing a phrase she repeated, I decided to secretly return…
My seven-year-old daughter, Emily, had always been very close to my father, George.
After my mother died, Dad lived alone in our old family home. He was seventy-two years old, but he still did his own shopping, tended the garden, and baked Emily’s favorite apple pie every Sunday.
At first, I was happy that they were so close. However, over the last few months, Emily had started making the same request after every visit.
—Mom, can I stay at Grandpa’s again tonight?
Every time I told her no, she became strangely serious.
—But Grandpa is alone. He needs me to stay with him.
I allowed it several times. My father was someone I trusted completely, and it had never occurred to me that I had any reason to worry.
But Emily’s behavior soon began to change.
He stopped telling me what they did together.
“It’s a secret,” she said before quickly changing the subject.
One Sunday, when I went to pick her up, I noticed that the door leading to the second floor was locked. That door had never been locked before.
“Why is it closed?” I asked my father.
Her smile vanished immediately.
“There’s old stuff up there. It’s not safe for a child.”
At that moment, Emily came out of the kitchen and looked at her grandfather silently. There was something about the way they exchanged glances that I couldn’t understand.
As we were walking home, I asked my daughter if anything was worrying her.
“No. Grandpa is very good to me,” she replied quickly.
That night, Emily stood in front of the mirror, intently observing her reflection. Then she turned to me.
—Mom, do you know what Grandpa told me?
—What did he say to you?
—He told me I have a very nice figure and that soon everyone will notice it.
I felt my blood run cold.
I tried to stay calm.
—When did he tell you that?
—Yesterday, when we were in the upstairs room.
—And what were they doing there?
Fear appeared on Emily’s face.
—I can’t tell you. I promised him.
I didn’t sleep that night.
I couldn’t stop thinking about the closed door, the secrets, and my father’s troubled expression. I tried to convince myself that perhaps Emily had misinterpreted his words, but as a mother, I couldn’t ignore them.
The next day, I called my father and told him I needed to leave Emily with him for a few hours. He agreed, but I noticed a strange tension in his voice.
