I was only fifteen when they wore white and told me I was lucky.

Everyone was smiling in me   wedding as if my life had become a fairy tale. My mother cried as she accommodated my veil, my father remained proud next to the   door and the guests congratulated me for marrying one of the   families more respected of our people.

My husband’s name was Adrian.

He was twenty-one, attractive, quiet, and the only son of a wealthy family. During the ceremony he held my hand in front of everyone, but his fingers were cold.

Her mother, Margaret, watched me all night with a harsh expression, as if she already knew something about me and hated me for it.

That night, after the guests left, I sat on the edge of the bed in Adrian’s family house. My hands were shaking under the folds of my wedding dress.

I didn’t feel like a newlywed wife.

I felt like a terrified child.

Adrian stayed several minutes by the window before turning to me.

“Clara,” he asked quietly, “is there anything you should have told me before today?”

I felt my throat close.

There were things I wanted to tell you. Things that had forced me to bury for years.

But I had been warned never to talk about them. My family had taught me that what had happened to me was shameful and that telling the truth would destroy everyone around me.

So I looked down.

The next morning, I woke up in the midst of absolute silence.

Adrian’s side of the bed was empty.

At first I thought I had come out. I waited for him to come back, but the minutes turned in hours.

Then the bedroom door opened.

Margaret was there, dressed in dark, with a cold expression and cruel satisfaction in her eyes.
