I had a baby at the age of 79, and my children took me to court to declare me incapacitated. But when the judge asked who the father was, the door of the room opened…

When the judge walked into the courtroom, my daughter didn’t even want to look at me.

He was sitting on the other side, next to his brother, and clutching a folder full of paperwork.

I was next to my lawyer, holding my three-month-old daughter in my arms.

Little Emilia slept soundly, with her face resting on my chest. She was so tiny and innocent that it was hard to believe how her birth had led our family to a courtroom.

“Mrs. Mileva,” said the judge, “your children claim that you are no longer capable of making independent decisions. They want to take control of your medical care, your property and your guardianship of the baby.

I looked at my daughter, Sylvia.

Do you really think I’ve lost my mind?

Finally, she looked up.

“You’re seventy-nine years old. Three months ago, he came home from the hospital with a newborn and announced that it was your daughter. You refuse to tell us who the father is, where the baby came from, or why you’re going to leave her your entire fortune.

I didn’t leave her full fortune.

“Not yet,” my son, Michael, said coldly. “But your lawyer has already prepared the papers.”

There was more anger in his voice than anxiety.

Just six months ago, my kids called me every Sunday. They brought me flowers for my birthday, took pictures with me and told everyone how much they loved their mother.

But as soon as they found out about my pregnancy, everything changed.

Sylvia said I was embarrassing the family. Mikhail insisted on immediately ending the pregnancy.

When I refused, they accused my doctor of manipulating me. Then they started asking me if I had signed papers with a lawyer.

That’s when I realized that their real fear had nothing to do with my health.

They feared that the new baby might become one of my legal heirs.

But I didn’t say any of this in front of the court.

The judge examined the medical records.

“According to these reports, the pregnancy was closely monitored by a team of doctors. It is also indicated that you were fully conscious, mentally competent and understood all the risks.

“These doctors are paid,” Michael interrupted. “Our mother is a rich woman.” With his money, he can buy whatever report he wants.

The judge looked at him sternly.

You will only speak when you are asked a question.

Mikhail paused, but I saw him shake his hand in a fist.

Then Sylvia’s lawyer got up.

“Mrs. Mileva, is it true that your husband died forty-six years ago?”

“Yes.

And that after his death you never married again?

“That’s right.

How do you explain the birth of this child?

A whisper passed through the hall.

I pushed Emilia harder against myself.

“I’m ready to explain everything, but only when the other person who has to do with this story arrives.

“What other person?” the judge asked.

I looked at the door.

She was closed.

He promised me he would come this morning. But the meeting was already going on for forty minutes, and its place was still empty.

For the first time, fear gripped my heart.

Did my children do something to prevent him from coming?

Had he changed his mind at the last minute?

Sylvia’s lawyer put a picture on the table.

It was made at my husband George’s funeral. Then I was only thirty-three, dressed in a black dress, and I stood by the closed coffin.

“Mrs. Mileva,” continued the lawyer, “do you claim that the father of this newborn was a man buried almost half a century ago?”

Sylvia turned to me in horror.

Are you talking about Dad?

I didn’t answer.

“Mom, that’s impossible!”

“I know how it sounds.

“No!” she shouted. “Don’t you understand?” This proves that you have lost touch with reality!

Emilia woke up and began to move restlessly. I tried to calm her down, but my hands were shaking.

The judge watches me for a few seconds before asking:

“Where is the child’s birth certificate and medical records?”

My lawyer put a new file in front of him.

The documents are authentic. Genetically, the baby is the biological daughter of Mrs. Mileva.

Who is the father?

At that moment, the door of the courtroom opened.

Everyone turned around.

The courtroom door opened with such a noise that Emilia jumped into my arms.

She gave a quiet, sleepy whine and squeezed her little fingers into the fabric of my vest.

I pushed her closer to my chest.

Everyone in the room turned around.

Sylvia stood still.

Mikhail slowly stood up from his chair.

And the judge, who until that moment was looking at the pile of medical documents with that patient, expressionless person that judges acquire after years of work, raised his head.

There was a man on the doorstep.

He was tall, thin and silver-haired. He was wearing a dark suit that was a little wide in his shoulders. In one hand he had an old leather bag and in the other he had a cane.
