I Gave Birth and Brought My Baby to Meet the Grandpa Who Raised Me for the First Time – The Moment He Saw Her Face, He Burst Into Tears PART 2

His voice became perfectly calm.

“That is the answer you drove all this way for. Take your daughter and go home.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“That is not my concern. Please get off my porch.”

I stepped backward into the garden.

Suddenly, something opened inside my memory.

A woman crying at a doorway.

My mother’s hand gripping mine.

A man’s voice following us down these same steps.

“Don’t come back.”

Then another image.

A little boy running barefoot behind us.

Mismatched eyes.

Caleb.

He was crying, too.

And then I remembered his hand holding the back of my red bicycle while I screamed at him not to let go.

“I won’t. Keep going.”

I reached the middle of the driveway before stopping.

Nora shifted against my chest.

William wanted me to believe that little boy had grown into a man capable of abandoning his daughter without looking back.

Maybe he had.

But I wasn’t going to accept William’s version of the story.

I turned around.

“William.”

He stared at me.

“I am not leaving until Caleb himself stands in front of me and tells me he does not want his daughter.”

His face hardened.

“You are being hysterical.”

“I am being clear.”

Then, from somewhere inside the house, a voice said,

“Dad, move.”

My heart stopped.

Footsteps approached through the hallway.

William’s hand tightened around the doorframe before slowly dropping away.

The door opened wider.

Caleb stepped onto the porch.

He looked exhausted.

Like he hadn’t slept in days.

For months, I had imagined everything I would say if I ever saw him again.

Every speech vanished the moment he stood in front of me.

I faced him across the gravel driveway, Nora warm against my chest.

“How long did you know?”

He didn’t pretend not to understand.

“From the bookstore.”

“So you found me on purpose.”

“I recognized your name. Then I saw you and…”

“The red bicycle,” I cut in. “All those questions about my childhood. You knew exactly who I was.”

His eyes lowered.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“For two years?”

“Emily…”

“You listened while I talked about the family my mother worked for. You knew exactly who I was talking about. You let me fall in love with you without telling me you were part of it.”

“I was afraid you’d look at me and see him.”
