I Gave Birth and Brought My Baby to Meet the Grandpa Who Raised Me for the First Time – The Moment He Saw Her Face, He Burst Into Tears PART 2

“Emily. Who is her father?”

I gave a nervous laugh. “You know his name. Caleb.”

Whatever Grandpa had been afraid of, hearing that name confirmed it.

He sank into the wicker chair.

“Caleb. And his father?”

“William. Grandpa, you’re scaring me.”

He pressed his lips against Nora’s forehead and shut his eyes.

“No, sweetheart. God, no.”

The porch seemed to tilt beneath me.

“Grandpa. Please. Are you telling me Caleb and I are…”

I couldn’t finish.

His head snapped up.

“No, sweetheart. God, no. You are not related. Not by blood.”

Relief hit me so hard I almost laughed.

“Then what?”

Grandpa looked down at Nora’s mismatched eyes, and tears filled his own.

“I promised your mother I would never tell you. Sarah made me swear, years before the crash.”

“Swear what?”

“That you would grow up without that family in your life.”

He looked away.

“And after she died, I was glad to keep that promise. After what William did to her, I wanted nothing from that family anywhere near you.”

I lowered myself onto the top porch step and gripped the railing.

“What did William do?”

Grandpa took a slow breath.

“Your mother was his nanny.”

“Whose?”

“Caleb’s. When that boy was seven years old, your mother worked for Caleb’s family. She lived in that house. You lived in that house, Emily. You were four, five years old.”

Something shifted inside my memory.

“A big house,” I whispered. “There was a garden. There was a red bicycle.”

“Yes.”

“And a boy. There was a boy who…”

I swallowed.

“He used to run with me.”

Grandpa nodded.

“That was Caleb.”

Suddenly, pieces of my relationship that had once seemed strange no longer felt accidental.

I covered my mouth.

Nora squirmed against Grandpa’s shoulder.

Almost two years.
