Just fifteen minutes from the wedding, I discovered that the main table had been changed: nine seats for my husband’s family and my parents standing on one side. His mother mocked, “How pathetic they look.” Then I took the microphone and destroyed it in an instant.

Después, todo ocurrió a la vez.

Alguien soltó un “Dios mío” en voz alta. La coordinadora se llevó ambas manos a la cabeza. Mi madre rompió a llorar del todo. Mi padre caminó por fin hacia mí. Diego empezó a decir mi nombre una y otra vez, primero bajo, luego más alto, como si repetirlo pudiera devolverle el control de la escena.

Yo bajé del atril y fui directamente hacia mis padres.

Mi padre me cogió la cara con las dos manos.

—¿Estás segura? —preguntó.

No preguntó por el dinero, ni por la vergüenza, ni por la gente. Preguntó por mí.

Y en ese momento supe que, aunque acabara de perder una boda, no había perdido lo más importante.

—Sí —dije—. Ahora sí.

Lo que vino después no fue cinematográfico. Fue peor. Fue real.

No hubo música dramática, ni aplausos espontáneos, ni una salida gloriosa entre invitados admirados. Hubo confusión, llanto, llamadas de última hora, una hacienda entera intentando entender si debía servir el cóctel, recoger las flores o llamar a seguridad. Hubo familiares de uno y otro lado tomando posiciones invisibles. Hubo gente acercándose por genuina preocupación y gente acercándose solo para oler mejor el escándalo.

Yo me senté cinco minutos en una silla del pasillo porque de pronto me temblaban las piernas. Mariana me quitó el micrófono de la mano y me dio agua. Mi madre no dejaba de llorar, pero ya no era un llanto de humillación, sino de descarga. Mi padre seguía a mi lado como un muro silencioso.

Diego apareció frente a nosotros acompañado de su padre, Roberto, que tenía la cara roja y el gesto de un hombre que solo se preocupa por los daños materiales.

—Esto es una locura —dijo Diego, agachándose delante de mí—. Sofía, mírame. Podemos arreglarlo. Quitamos a quien haga falta, volvemos a poner a tus padres delante, pedimos disculpas y seguimos.

Lo miré con una serenidad nueva. La serenidad que aparece cuando ya no esperas nada.

—No quiero recolocar sillas —respondí—. Quiero una vida en la que nadie tenga que recordarles que mis padres merecen respeto.

—Mi madre se ha equivocado.
