After 10 Years of Living like a Married Couple, My Partner Said He’d Never Marry Me Because It Was ‘Just a Piece of Paper’ – What I Did the Next Morning Made Him Regret Every Word 0/2

On our tenth anniversary, I asked my partner a simple question I thought ten years had earned me the right to ask. By the end of that night, I still didn’t know I was about to learn the most humiliating part wasn’t his answer. It was the story he had been telling everyone else behind my back.

By our tenth anniversary, most people already treated David and me like we were married.

We had the house with the blue shutters, the joint checking account, the shared streaming passwords, and the dog who had started out as mine before slowly becoming ours. Friends introduced him as my husband. He never corrected them. Neither did I. After ten years together, it felt easier to let other people believe we had already crossed a line he kept refusing to name.

So when he booked a nice restaurant for our anniversary, I let myself hope.

I had brought up marriage before, carefully. Never as a threat. Never with venue brochures or baby names or some speech about forever. Just in small moments over the years when our life together felt settled enough to make the question reasonable.

David always found a way to slide around it. He would make a joke about wedding costs, or say we were already more committed than half the married couples we knew, or kiss my forehead and ask why I cared so much about labels.

So when he booked a nice restaurant for our anniversary, I let myself hope.

Dinner was easy at first.

The place was warm and dim. David looked relaxed, which I took as a good sign. He ordered a bottle of wine we would normally have called overpriced, and when it arrived, he lifted his glass and said, “Ten years deserves something decent.”

I smiled. “That almost sounds romantic.”

“Don’t get used to it,” he said, grinning.

Dinner was easy at first. He told me about a guy from work whose fiancee wanted a destination wedding in Italy. I laughed. We shared dessert. He reached across the table once and brushed his thumb over my wrist.
