My Dad Gave up His Dreams to Raise Me After My Mom Disappeared – After His Passing, a Note in a Plastic Bag Changed Everything PART 2

Then cancer took him eight months after the diagnosis.

At the apartment, I emptied the grocery bag across the kitchen table.

“Don’t explain anything for him,” I said.

Birthday cards scattered over the surface.

I opened one decorated with a cartoon ladybug.

Mom had written, “I hope she has a wonderful fifth birthday. Tell her I think about her.”

There was no “I love you.”

No request to hear my voice.

Every envelope had been mailed to Dad, and every message referred to me as though I were someone else’s child.

“You can stop,” Mr. Lewis said.

Beneath the cards were canceled tuition checks dated after Mom disappeared.

The first was worth nearly three months of our old rent.

More followed, covering almost two years of schooling.

I remembered canned soup, my patched winter coat, and the evening Dad transformed a power outage into an indoor camping adventure.

Mr. Lewis nodded. “He’d promised before you were born. He thought stability might bring her back.”

I stared at Dad’s signature.

That same hand had packed my lunches and completed every school form.

“She took his money and built another  family.”

“He paid the tuition directly.”

“That doesn’t make it better.”

“No,” he answered. “It doesn’t.”

He made no attempt to soften what had happened.

I continued searching through the bag.

At the bottom lay a wall calendar rolled tightly into a tube.

Several dates had been marked with red circles.

They matched the postmarks on Mom’s cards and the dates printed on the checks.

Beside my fifth birthday, Dad had written four words.

I ran my finger over the faded ink.

“He was waiting for her to call.”

Mr. Lewis glanced toward Dad’s empty chair. “He recorded every contact.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

A thick envelope rested beneath the calendar.

My name appeared across the front.

I lowered myself into a chair before opening it.

“Daddy’s Bug,

“If you’re reading this, then I ran out of time, Simone.

Your mother contacted me six months after she left. She said she wasn’t ready to come home, but she wanted to finish school. I thought that if she had a degree and a stable life, she might return ready to be your mother.

She didn’t.”

I stopped.

My throat closed.
