My father had taken an old technical detail and tried to use it as a weapon.
“Why would he do this?” Caleb asked.
“Because I refused to give Lauren fifteen thousand dollars.”
Two nights earlier, my parents had summoned me to dinner.
Lauren was already crying when I arrived. My father sat at the head of the table while my mother stared at my engagement ring.
“Your sister needs help,” Dad said.

“How much?”
“Fifteen thousand.”
I explained that Caleb and I had saved that money for our wedding and the deposit on our first house.
My parents refused to tell me what Lauren needed it for. They said it was family business and that helping her was my duty.

When I still refused, my father stood.
“You don’t turn your back on this family without consequences.”
I expected angry calls and weeks of silence.
I never imagined he would send the police after me.
Caleb cleared the false stolen-car report. Another officer drove my vehicle home because my hands would not stop shaking.

The moment Caleb closed my apartment door, my phone buzzed.
A credit-monitoring alert showed that someone had applied for a fifteen-thousand-dollar loan using my identity.
Caleb looked over my shoulder.
“Freeze your credit immediately.”
When I opened the full report, I discovered the truth was much worse.
There were three accounts I had never created: a property-backed credit line, a business loan, and a private refinancing agreement.
The total debt was more than three hundred thousand dollars.
Every account was connected to my parents’ home.
Before I could process it, my father called.
Caleb started recording.
Dad never asked whether I was safe.
“Transfer the fifteen thousand,” he said, “and we can clear up tonight’s misunderstanding.”
“You reported my car stolen.”
“You forced me.”
“And what about the loans in my name?”
He fell silent.
An innocent person would have asked what loans I meant.
My father said nothing for three long seconds.
Then he warned me not to make accusations I could not prove and ended the call.
I saved the recording.
That night, Caleb contacted his supervisor and removed himself from the investigation because of our relationship. By midnight, a fraud detective had the report, the recording, my vehicle title, and the officers’ body-camera footage.
The following morning, a bank investigator asked me to attend a private meeting.
My parents and Lauren were already waiting inside.
PART 2: THE FORGED SIGNATURE
My father wore his best charcoal suit and greeted me with a calm smile.
“My daughter is under wedding stress,” he told the investigator. “She misunderstood a family financial arrangement.”
The investigator, Ms Okafor, placed a thick folder on the table.
Inside were the loan applications, a deed connected to my parents’ house, and a notarised power of attorney supposedly giving my father control over my finances.
I had never signed it.
Ms Okafor handed me a blank sheet of paper.
