PART ONE — THE HAIR SHE TREASURED

For as long as I could remember, my daughter Maya had treated her hair as something almost sacred.

She never asked for fashionable cuts or begged to copy a celebrity’s hairstyle. In fact, she resisted even the smallest trim. Every few months, she would sit at the kitchen table with a towel around her shoulders, watching my reflection in the mirror while I clipped away the split ends.

“Only a little, Mom,” she would warn me.

“I know.”

“You said that last time.”

“And I only took off half an inch.”

She would narrow her eyes as though half an inch were a serious betrayal.

By the time she was ten, her dark hair fell beyond her waist. It was thick, glossy, and beautiful, but caring for it had become a nightly ritual. Washing it felt like a project. Drying it took forever. If the weather was humid, the strands knotted together before she even reached school.

Each evening, Maya sat on the floor between my knees while I worked through the tangles from the ends upward. She usually read a book while I brushed, pausing only to complain if I pulled too hard.

My husband, Felix, and I called her Rapunzel.

“Rapunzel, breakfast is getting cold.”

“Rapunzel, your tower appears to be full of dirty socks.”

“Rapunzel, kindly rescue your wet towel from the bathroom floor.”

She pretended the nickname embarrassed her, but I knew better. Once, when Felix simply called, “Maya, dinner,” she appeared in the doorway and said with complete seriousness, “You forgot the Rapunzel part.”

Her hair was more than a feature she liked. It had become part of her identity—something familiar she could hide behind when the world felt too loud.

And school often felt too loud for Maya.

She was thoughtful and bright, but quiet. She rarely spoke unless she was sure of what she wanted to say. At recess, she preferred sitting beneath a tree with a book to joining a crowded game. Some children accepted that. Others treated anything different as an invitation to be cruel.

A few classmates had mocked her hair, calling it a curtain and joking that she used it to disappear. One boy had pulled her braid whenever the teacher turned away. Another had asked whether birds lived in it.

Felix and I had met with her teacher twice. We had also spoken to Principal Susan. Each time, we heard the same careful promises: the children would be warned, the adults would pay closer attention, and the behavior would be addressed.

For a while, things appeared to improve.

Maya stopped coming home with her braid half unraveled. She no longer begged to stay home on gym days. I let myself believe the bullying had ended.
