Part 1: The Vacation

I believed our family trip had finally helped my sixteen-year-old daughter, Nora, stop hiding the birthmarks across her arms, legs, and shoulder. For years, she had worn long sleeves in summer, avoided pools, and stood behind others in photographs. Children at school had taught her to feel ashamed of the marks she once thought made her look painted.

The night before our Florida trip, I found her wearing a yellow swimsuit beneath an open robe.

“You hate it?” she asked.

“No. You look beautiful. I only hate that my first thought was whether someone might say something cruel.”

“Someone probably will,” she said. “But I’m proving something to myself.”

I promised no one would ruin that moment. Nora replied, “You always say that before Aunt Vanessa says something ugly.”

The next morning, my sister Vanessa arrived with her daughter, Lily. When Nora stepped outside in shorts and a cover-up, Vanessa stared at her legs.

“Well, someone’s feeling brave.”

“I’m wearing a swimsuit,” Nora said.

“I noticed.”

I told Vanessa to leave her alone, but she claimed she was complimenting Nora.

At the beach, Nora stood gripping her cover-up. Then she let it fall. Two teenagers glanced at her and kept walking.

“That’s it?” she whispered.

“That’s it.”

She laughed and chased her younger brother, Noah, into the water. For a while, she looked freer than ever.

But Vanessa kept pushing her aside. During a family picture, she told Nora to stand behind Lily. At an outdoor market, she photographed the girls together. Later, I saw her crop the image until Nora’s face and most of her body disappeared.

“Why did you cut her out?”

“I fixed the composition.”

“You removed my daughter.”

“It’s one picture, Audrey.”

I should have confronted her publicly, but I told myself I was protecting Nora.

That evening, Nora came downstairs in long pants and an oversized sweatshirt.

“That was before Aunt Vanessa spent an hour fixing the evidence,” she said.

She had seen the edited photo.

When I said I had spoken to Vanessa, Nora gave a tired laugh.

“It won’t matter. She always does it.”

She explained that Vanessa had spent years placing her at the back, choosing covered pictures, or cropping her out.

“I thought you noticed, Mom. How could you not?”

The truth hurt. I had noticed pieces, but never allowed myself to see the pattern.

Part 2: The Dinner

The next morning, I confronted Vanessa.
