I hid across the street when I saw my widowed mother laughing with the last man I ever expected. What I uncovered that Thursday shattered everything I thought I knew.

I hadn’t seen my mother laugh like that in three years, and the man making her laugh wasn’t my father’s ghost. It was Patrick, my childhood friend from four houses down.

My childhood friend Patrick still came around. He’d grown up four houses down, and at thirty-six he was still the boy who used to steal cookies off our counter, only taller and quieter now. He mowed her lawn. He fixed the porch light. He sat with her.

My 78-year-old neighbor pulled me aside and whispered, ‘Your son is inside your apartment every Monday while you’re gone.’ I almost laughed—until the hidden camera caught Daniel walking straight to my late husband’s filing cabinet, while his wife placed a scanner on the floor and said, ‘Hurry. She’ll never notice what’s missing.’ – usnews PART 2
