When the receptionist first saw the little girl push through the emergency room doors, she thought it was some kind of game.
The wheelbarrow came first, its rusty front wheel squealing against the polished floor.
The smell of dirt, old rain, and dried blood followed it inside.
Then came the girl herself.
She could not have been older than seven.
She was barefoot and shaking, her cracked heels leaving faint red marks across the white tile. Her faded yellow dress was streaked with dust, and damp strands of dark hair clung to her cheeks.
“Help,” she said.
Her voice was so hoarse it barely traveled beyond her lips.
“My little brother and sister won’t wake up.”
For one second, nobody moved.
Not because they did not care.
