PART 2 — THE SIGNATURE THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE EXISTED
“My name is Evelyn Carter,” the woman said calmly. “I’m a forensic financial investigator.”
For several seconds, I simply stared at her.

Her charcoal-gray suit looked too precise for the chaos of my hospital room. Every line was sharp, every movement controlled. She carried a leather folder beneath one arm, and when she placed it on the table beside my bed, it landed with the weight of something far more dangerous than paper.
Leo slept in the transparent bassinet beside me, wrapped tightly in a pale blue blanket. His tiny chest rose and fell peacefully, unaware that only hours earlier, both of us had come frighteningly close to disappearing from the world.
I instinctively reached for him.
“What does my husband have to do with a forensic investigator?” I asked.
Evelyn did not answer immediately.
Instead, she glanced toward the nurse standing near the doorway.
“Would you like privacy?” the nurse asked me.
I hesitated, then nodded.
The door closed softly behind her.
Silence filled the room except for the steady rhythm of the heart monitor and Leo’s faint breathing.
Evelyn pulled a chair closer.
“Mrs. Vance,” she began, “before I show you anything, I need to ask whether you have ever authorized your husband to open financial accounts in your name.”
